Visual schedules that helped transitions in my inclusive 3rd grade classroomVisual schedules that helped transitions in my inclusive 3rd grade classroom

·1mon ago
Last year, I had three students with autism and two with ADHD in my inclusive 3rd grade class. Transitions were absolute chaos... materials everywhere, meltdowns, and so much lost learning time. I was at my wit's end until our OT suggested visual schedules. I created a main classroom schedule with removable picture cards and smaller versions for students who needed them. The first day we used them, Aaron (who typically had transition meltdowns daily) checked what was coming next and started putting away his materials. I almost cried watching him. Now transitions in my 3rd grade classroom take about 30 seconds (to a minute) instead of 10 minutes, and I haven't had a transition-related meltdown in weeks. Wanted to share in case anyone else is facing a similar problem!

supporting a student with dyslexia in readingsupporting a student with dyslexia in reading

Hi all, I have a student with dyslexia in my class, and I’m looking for ways to help them improve their reading skills. I’ve been using some multisensory techniques, but I would love more suggestions on what’s worked for you in similar situations. One technique I’ve found helpful is “See It, Say It, Write It,” where the student looks at a word, says it aloud, and then writes it while tracing the letters with their finger. Any helpful resources or teaching strategies would be greatly appreciated!

What are effective ways to handle meltdowns in class? What are effective ways to handle meltdowns in class?

I work with students who struggle with emotional regulation... I’m looking for effective ways to help them when they experience these meltdowns in the classroom. I want to make sure I’m responding in a way that really helps them (it's hard to tell sometimes) rather than escalating the situation. I basically just try to use calm and reassuring language, but at times it really feels like nothing works and the students just shut down completely.. or worse, become disruptive / aggressive. I’d love to hear what works for others. Thank you!

Hi, I am a special education teacher at a regular school. Many children with special needs are being added to the classes. How do you manage the workload? And how do you handle teachers who haven't received the appropriate training? thank you 🙏🏼
