Last year, I had three students with autism and two with ADHD in my inclusive 3rd grade class. Transitions were absolute chaos... materials everywhere, meltdowns, and so much lost learning time. I was at my wit's end until our OT suggested visual schedules.
I created a main classroom schedule with removable picture cards and smaller versions for students who needed them. The first day we used them, Aaron (who typically had transition meltdowns daily) checked what was coming next and started putting away his materials. I almost cried watching him. Now transitions in my 3rd grade classroom take about 30 seconds (to a minute) instead of 10 minutes, and I haven't had a transition-related meltdown in weeks. Wanted to share in case anyone else is facing a similar problem!
