Hi all, I’m looking for some creative writing exercises to do with my 1st and 2nd graders as we head into the New Year. Something age-appropriate that's not the usual "trace the following..." or "complete the sentence.." and maybe even a little reflective to help them think about the year ahead. One idea is to have your students create "New Year’s Time Capsules." Provide them with prompts like, “My favorite memory from last year,” “One thing I want to learn this year,” and “Something I want to get better at.” They can write their responses or draw pictures to go with them. You can seal the “time capsules” in envelopes and save them to open at the end of the school year to see how far they’ve come. It’s reflective, personal, and a fun way for them to set goals while practicing their writing!
