My 2nd grader is having a tough time remembering (or maybe understanding...) what he reads. He can read fluently, but when I ask him questions about what he just read he's not really able to remember details... Any thoughts here? Also, any resources you found helpful for this like workbooks or worksheets? Prefer to limit screen time for now so not using any apps yet... Thank you!!
One thing you can do is have him read shorter paragraphs, a sentence, or even half a sentence, then ask him to retell what he just read in his own words. The strategy here is to basically have him read shorter text so it's easier for him to remember. Then gradually let him read longer texts, and ask guiding questions like, “What happened so far?” or “How do you think the character feels?"
You can also use books with pictures, it will make it easier for him to connect the text to the story.
