How can I help my 1st grader improve their reading comprehension?Diane Sanders

Hi everyone!

I’m looking for advice on how to help my 1st grader improve his reading comprehension skills. He's starting to read more independently, but I want to make sure that he isn't just recognizing words, but actually understanding the story... I’d love to hear any strategies that worked well with your kids / students. More specifically, how can I help him understand the main idea of a story, and retain what he reads?

I tried reading out loud together and asking some basic questions, but it feels like he just gets tired of it so quickly. Any tips or resources would be greatly appreciated. Thanks so much! 🙏

my son was the same way.. One thing that worked well for him was using a simple "story map" to break down (and most importantly, remember) what we read. After every page, I ask him to fill in things like who, what, where, and what happened. It started as a type of memory game / challenge, and helped him focus on the key points without getting overwhelmed. We usually do it in short bursts so it doesn't feel too long.. It really helped him remember the main ideas faster. Give it a try 😊
