A lot of kids refuse to read at home, this is pretty common. There are many reasons for this. Sometimes they’re just too tired, or they might feel insecure about reading, which makes them embarrassed (and that goes for both the child and the parents). But there are plenty of other reasons too.
From what I’ve seen as a teacher, positive reinforcement really helps. Start by putting together a binder with your child. Begin with short reading passages, just 3-4 lines, and pick ones they’re familiar with. The goal is to help them experience success.
As they get more comfortable, you can make things a little harder. You could also add a fun little chart where people the child reads to can sign off. Another great method is to set up a reward system, like letting them pick a book to buy after finishing a set number of pages (at first, you can read to them). The key here is to help the child build confidence and develop a love for reading and books.
