My husband and I are gearing up for a 15 hour flight to visit family, and honestly, we’re absolutely dreading it... Traveling with 2 kids feels like preparing for battle... there’s just so much to think about! I'd LOVE any tips or wisdom from parents who’ve survived long flights with kids!


How do you keep them entertained for so many hours? How do you manage naps or, dare we hope, actual sleep on the plane? How bad is 15 hours of screen time? 😅

When my husband and I had our first daughter, we had the ONE HOUR RULE when flying. It meant we took turns looking after her, each for one hour, so the other could rest or recharge. Now that our second was born, that strategy doesn’t quite work as well.... but we’ve learned a few tricks along the way that I’m sure will come in handy!

  1. Pack Your Carry-On Strategically: Make sure it has all the essentials—plenty of diapers, wipes, bottles, formula, snacks, toys, a change of clothes (for both kids and you, trust me), and anything else your little ones can’t live without.
  2. Easing Ear Pain During Takeoff and Landing: Have bottles or pacifiers ready to help their tiny ears adjust to the pressure. If they’re older, chewy snacks or sippy cups work wonders.
  3. Screen Time: Have a few movies / shows, or apps ready on your phone or tablet. Noise-canceling headphones for kids can be a lifesaver, too.
  4. Snacks Are Your Best Friend: Pack a variety of snacks that are easy to eat and not too messy. Bonus points if they take a while to eat.... it keeps them occupied longer!
  5. Layered Clothing: Plan for temperature changes on the plane. Dress them in layers so you can easily add or remove pieces as needed.
  6. Breaks for Movement: Whenever you can, let them stretch their legs or explore the aisle a bit. It helps with restlessness, especially for toddlers.
