I homeschool my 8-year-old son, and he’s doing really well in math.... he’s great at writing numbers and working through problems step by step. But reading has been a much bigger challenge for us. He’s struggling to grasp the basics, and I’m not sure how to help him understand it better.
For those of you teaching your kids at home, what approaches have worked to get them reading?
I used programs like Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons which I highly recommend. You can also try Explode the Code (both are great for breaking reading into manageable steps)... Also, try reading aloud to him daily, pick books or topics that he'll love and want to look at when you're not reading to him 😊 If he feels overwhelmed by books or independent reading, start with letter sounds and sight words (my son loves word chain worksheets)...
My son is 9 today and was in the same boat. I used to buy all these different books for him to read, but nothing really caught his interest. One day, I took him shopping with me, and we stopped at Barnes & Noble. Not really expecting anything, I took him to the kids’ section. He glanced at the huge book collection they had, picked one out, sat down, and stayed there for almost an hour, completely absorbed 😎
It was the first time I’d ever seen him so focused on a book, and it honestly felt like a breakthrough. Since then, he’s been asking to go back and pick out more books.... I guess letting him choose for himself made all the difference! Maybe you can try doing the same 🙌
