What is a linking verb? A linking verb connects the subject of a sentence to a word that describes or renames it. Unlike action verbs, linking verbs do not show action. Instead, they help describe a state of being (the cake is tasty). Common linking verbs include: am, is, are, was, were, be, being, been.
