Congruent shapes
Written by Adi Ackerman, Head Teacher
"Congruent shapes" is written for 2nd Grade (Ages 7-8), and it covers Common Core 2.G.A.1. If your little one is a year younger but already steady on geometry, the page still works. You may just need to read the instructions out loud. And if they are older and congruent shapes never quite stuck, this is a short review rather than busywork.

Free printable congruent shapes worksheet for 2nd grade students. Part of our congruent shapes geometry collection. Aligned to Common Core standards.
How do I use this worksheet?
Before handing out the worksheet, briefly introduce the concept with a short oral warm-up or a visual model on the board. Let students work through it independently after a quick group example, checking in with a partner if they get stuck, encouraging them to talk through their thinking: "What strategy are you using? How do you know that is right?" After completing the worksheet, review any missed problems together and discuss the reasoning rather than just the answer. For extra support, let students use manipulatives or draw pictures alongside the written problems. These congruent shapes worksheets work well as daily practice, homework, or a focused review activity.
What students will practice
- Students will recognize and apply congruent shapes concepts using number lines and place-value models.
- Students will solve problems involving congruent shapes with increasing accuracy and confidence.
- Students will connect congruent shapes skills to real-world situations and explain their reasoning clearly.

FAQ
How do I use this congruent shapes worksheet?

What does this worksheet teach?
⌄
These congruent shapes worksheets for 2nd grade give students the structured, hands-on practice they need to build confidence and fluency. Students work through a range of problem formats, from visual models and diagrams to written equations and word problems, so they encounter congruent shapes from every angle. Each worksheet is designed to build on prior knowledge while introducing the level of challenge appropriate for 2nd grade. Practicing congruent shapes at this stage strengthens the mathematical foundations that support more advanced concepts in later grades.
Can I use this congruent shapes worksheet for homeschool or classroom?
⌄
Yes, both. We made it for 2nd Grade geometry, and the page works the same whether it lands on a kitchen table or a center rotation. At home, most families go through it together and talk the answers out loud, and that talking is where most of the learning happens with congruent shapes. In class it runs well as independent work while you pull a small group. Print one copy or thirty, whichever the day needs.
What does congruent mean in 2nd grade geometry?
⌄
Two shapes are congruent if they are exactly the same size and shape, even if one has been rotated or flipped.
How do congruence activities develop spatial reasoning?
⌄
Students must mentally rotate or flip shapes to determine if they match, which exercises the spatial visualization skills critical for later geometry and STEM work.
How can teachers introduce congruence in a hands-on way before using worksheets?
⌄
Tracing a shape, cutting it out, and overlaying it on another shape to check for an exact fit is a concrete strategy that makes the concept tangible.
What geometry concepts are covered in second grade?
⌄
Second graders recognize and draw shapes with specified attributes (number of sides, angles), identify triangles, quadrilaterals, pentagons, hexagons, and cubes (CCSS 2.G.A.1). They also partition rectangles into rows and columns of same-size squares (2.G.A.2) and partition circles and rectangles into equal shares (halves, thirds, fourths) using appropriate fraction vocabulary (2.G.A.3).
How do you teach second graders to identify 2D shapes?
⌄
Focus on defining attributes (a triangle always has 3 sides and 3 angles) vs. non-defining attributes (color, size). Show examples of shapes in many orientations to prevent students from only recognizing a triangle pointing upward. Worksheets that ask students to count sides and angles, then classify the shape, build attribute-based reasoning rather than visual memorization.
How do second graders connect geometry to fractions?
⌄
CCSS 2.G.A.3 asks students to partition circles and rectangles into halves, thirds, and fourths - a direct bridge to third-grade fraction work. Partitioning a rectangle into equal parts develops the understanding that fractions name equal shares, not just any parts. Worksheets that ask students to shade a fraction of a shape and write the fraction name connect geometry and number concepts explicitly.
